Longley Auctions is set to host its latest auction, featuring a remarkable new discovery – a 6d Prince Consort kiss print – along with a wide range of specialized philatelic collections. Lot 386, the newly discovered 6d slate grey (Scott #5) with a kiss print variety, takes centre stage on the cover of the auction catalogue.
According to owner Bill Longley, this is an “unreported major variety” and the only recorded example as far as current research has shown.
“The kiss print shows the top of the stamp, most of the letters of ‘Canada Postage’ and ‘six pence,’ and all four ‘6’ values shifted upwards,” Longley explained. “This is a major new discovery and an important rarity for any complete Canada specialized collection.”
The lot is accompanied by a 2024 Greene foundation certificate and has a pre-sale estimate of $2,500.
The auction will also feature several other specialized collections, including the “Goldilocks Collection of one-cent Small Queen Strands of Hair,” portions of the Earl Palmer Boer War postal history collection, mint Canada blocks, modern Queen Elizabeth varieties, Zeppelin postal stationery, extensive British Commonwealth offerings – including Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago, Cape of Good Hope, and Australia – the United States, worldwide forgeries, worldwide dealer stock, and an extensive worldwide collection.
The live public auction will be held at Longley Auctions’ offices at 210 Napier St. in Hamilton on Oct. 12, with bidding available in person, online through the Stamp Auction Network, and by mail and telephone. Advance viewing is available by appointment during auction week (Oct. 7-11) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with limited auction day viewing from 8 to 10 a.m. For more details and to view the online catalogue, visit longleyauctions.com.
