The show will go on

Trajan media is getting back into the show business. It’s been more than 11 years since Canadian Stamp News publisher Trajan sold The International Collectors’ Fair, a.k.a. TICF. Since then, our “show” presence has been that of exhibitor at many stamp and coin shows across Canada. This is about to change. We recently acquired the assets of the National Postage Stamp Show, organized for almost 30 years by the Canadian Stamp Dealers’ Association. The most recent one was held Nov. 6-8 at the International Centre in Mississauga, ON. The CSDA announced after its spring show that the non-profit organization would no longer host the show, which was bleeding money. Continue reading →

Specialist ‘digging up material’ on Canada’s airmail history

Dr. Robert Galway, from the left, Garfield Portch and John Laraway review material on Canada’s airmail history during a recent presentation at West Toronto Stamp Club.

Dr. Robert Galway, a prominent aerophilatelist from Toronto, recently presented a lecture on the formative years of aviation in Canada and early history of airmail as part of the West Toronto Stamp Club (WTSC) discussion group program. Galway said he has spent the past four years “digging up material” on the topic of aviation and has learned a lot about the early history of Canadian airmail along the way. “This man is an expert on Canadian airmail and Canadian semi-official airmail in particular, and I’m going to learn a whole lot because I just don’t know enough about airmail in the Canadian context,” said Garfield Portch, a director with the WTSC and a Fellow of The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC). This presentation – part of a two-part series with the finale coming next February – focused on civil aviation in Canada from 1909-24 while part two will detail Galway’s personal interest in aerophilatelic material. Collector classifieds take to the web

As I wrote in a column during the summer months, here at Trajan Media, we have been busy working behind the scenes on a number of new initiatives to launch over the fall and winter months. Our first major initiative this fall is a new website where philatelists and numismatists can meet at our new online marketplace to buy and sell stamps, postcards, first-day covers and all types of numismatic collectibles including coins, medals, tokens and paper money. This new online market place is called coinstampclassifieds.ca. While the venue is new, selling classifieds has been part of our DNA since our beginnings. Continue reading →

B.C. security firm sets eyes on stamps

An iridescent colour is created through the reflection and fragmentation of light waves off a number of nano-sized holes that can be added to virtually any surface.

Postal authorities around the world are looking to bolster their anti-counterfeiting measures, and they may look to nanotechnology for help. While the next step in sizing up this new technology is a big one, there has been solid interest from investors, who recently provided $2.6 million during the latest round of fundraising, which ended Aug. 26. “We were pleased with the strong interest shown in this financing, which went quickly despite the tough market conditions,” said Doug Blakeway, CEO of British Columbia’s Nanotech Security Corp., which has been in the security business for more than 20 years. “This financing, along with our existing cash on hand, provides the company with enough working capital to ramp up for sales opportunities for optical thin film and KolourOptik nano-optical banknote products, which are now presenting themselves in greater numbers than ever.” Continue reading →
