Stamp dealers, auction houses and collectors shipping parcels within Canada could see some relief from rising mailing costs following Canada Post’s introduction of a temporary discount on domestic parcel fuel surcharges.
The Crown corporation is reducing its published fuel surcharge by 15 per cent on eligible domestic parcel services from Oct. 5, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027. The measure comes as businesses prepare for the busy holiday shipping season.
For philatelic dealers and auction houses regularly mailing stamps, collections, catalogues and other merchandise, the reduction could provide modest savings on domestic shipments. Collectors sending parcels within Canada may also benefit.
However, the discount applies only to the fuel surcharge, not the total shipping charge. It will be applied automatically to eligible shipments, with the resulting fuel surcharge subject to a minimum of 25 per cent.
Canada Post has included fuel surcharges in its pricing for nearly two decades to account for fluctuations in transportation costs. Its domestic parcel surcharge is based on the average price of diesel fuel in Canada and is adjusted weekly.
The postal service says the temporary reduction is part of its efforts to help businesses manage shipping expenses while maintaining competitive parcel delivery services. Current surcharge rates and additional details are available on Canada Post’s website.
