Stamps, coins stolen in Canada Post theft

A pack of 25 stamps as well as two coins were stolen last week from a Canada Post office in Richards Landing, Ont., which is located on the north coast of St. Joseph Island.

On Aug. 16, before 4:30 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Thessalon Detachment responded to an alarm at the post office on 1208 Richards St. Police arrived a short time later to find a window at the front of building was broken and the frame completely removed.

A 25-stamp pack of 85-cent stamps (totalling $21.25) was stolen, according to police. The stamps depict a dog and are believed to be from Canada Post’s 2018 “Year of the Dog” issue.

The stolen coins include a $20 pure silver piece, “Glistening North: Arctic Wolf,” which depicts a wolf within a snowy landscape. The second coin, “Celebration of Spring: Apple Blossoms,” has a denomination of $15 and depicts an apple tree with blossoms.

A check of the area revealed about four cars were also entered, and reports  came in of vehicles in nearby Bruce Mines—just across St. Joseph Channel—that were entered with debit cards and possibly credit cards stolen.

The investigation is ongoing.
