Stamps capture spirit of Quebec’s sugar shack season

Two newly issued stamps bring Quebec’s sugaring off season to life through richly detailed, nostalgic imagery, capturing the enduring traditions of the province’s sugar shacks.

Unveiled March 19 in Montréal during the Cabane Panache Festival, the pair of stamps is shaped like classic maple syrup cans and highlights the sights, sounds and flavours associated with springtime in Quebec’s maple producing regions. From maple taffy enjoyed outdoors to music filled gatherings and hearty seasonal meals, the designs emphasize the cultural experience as much as the product itself.

Created by illustrator Gérard DuBois in collaboration with the Paprika design firm, the stamps draw stylistic inspiration from commercial and advertising art of the 1940s and 1950s. The result is a warm, retro aesthetic featuring lively, communal scenes that position the sugar shack as a place of celebration, connection and shared heritage.

The subject matter reflects traditions deeply embedded in Quebec’s identity. The sugaring off season traces its origins to Indigenous Peoples of the Eastern Woodlands, including the W8banakiak, Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Mi’gmaq, who developed techniques for harvesting and processing maple sap long before European contact. These practices were later adopted and adapted by French settlers, eventually giving rise to the sugar shacks that emerged in the 1850s.

Today, while modern production methods have increased efficiency and scale, the cultural rituals associated with sugar shacks remain largely unchanged, continuing to draw families and visitors each spring. Quebec now produces about 90 per cent of Canada’s maple syrup and more than 70 per cent of global output.

The issue includes a booklet of six Permanent domestic rate stamps along with an Official First Day Cover. The OFDC features a maple leaf cancellation from Saint Georges, Que., home to the annual Festival beauceron de l’érable, further tying the issue to one of the province’s key maple producing regions.

Through their distinctive shape and evocative artwork, the stamps offer a compact but vivid tribute to one of Quebec’s most recognizable and enduring traditions.
