Royal Mail has issued a new commemorative stamp series titled Valour and Victory: Stories of the Second World War, released on May 1 to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
The release comes just days before nationwide commemorations began on May 5, with events continuing this week across the United Kingdom.
The issue features 10 first-class stamps arranged in two horizontal se-tenant strips of five – each depicting individuals whose bravery and sacrifice were instrumental in the Allied victory. Among those honoured are George Arthur Roberts, Mary Morris, Tommy Macpherson, Violette Szabo and John Harrison – each representing different aspects of service, resistance, and heroism during the Second World War.
A souvenir sheet accompanying the set pays tribute to Dame Vera Lynn, affectionately known as “the Forces’ Sweetheart,” whose music lifted spirits on both the home front and the battlefield.
In addition to the stamp panes, Royal Mail is offering a range of collectible products, including a first-day cover with a special postmark and a limited-edition 24-carat gold stamp set. These items have been available for pre-order and are now on general sale as of May 1.
The 80th anniversary of VE Day is being marked with a four-day celebration that began May 5. Highlights include a military procession, ceremonial flypast, and numerous tributes to those who served in the war effort.
The Valour and Victory issue offers a timely and powerful reflection on individual courage and national resilience – commemorating the legacy of those whose stories helped shape the course of modern history.
