The story everyone believed … Until two researchers asked why

For nearly a century, collectors accepted the colourful “Riel Essay” as an unissued stamp essay prepared for Louis Riel’s provisional government during the Red River Resistance. The remarkable label appeared in catalogues, exhibits and collections, becoming part of Canadian philatelic lore.

But what if the accepted explanation didn’t stand up to closer scrutiny?

That question eventually brought together Canadian researchers Charles Verge and Marc Castel, whose very different approaches to research proved to be the key. Verge drew on decades of painstaking work in archives, libraries and historical collections, while Castel embraced digitized newspapers, emerging technologies and artificial intelligence to complement the investigation. Combining their expertise, the pair assembled the evidence needed to challenge nearly a century of accepted wisdom.

In the latest issue of Canadian Stamp News, readers are taken behind the scenes of this remarkable investigation, following the twists and turns that transformed a long-accepted explanation into one of the hobby’s most fascinating research projects. It is a compelling account of persistence, collaboration and the determination to follow the evidence wherever it led.

Read the extensive feature in the latest issue of Canadian Stamp News and discover how two researchers, combining traditional scholarship with modern research tools, re-examined a story long accepted by collectors and rewrote a chapter of Canadian philatelic history.
