Ridgeway Post Office to celebrate 100th anniversary of Point Abino Lighthouse with special cancel

This Saturday, June 10, as the summer’s guided tours begin, the Ridgeway Post Office will join the Point Abino Lighthouse Preservation Society (PALPS) for the lighthouse’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

A special cancellation will be introduced to acknowledge the milestone following the ceremony, which will be held at the Bertie Boating Club on 1010 Point Abino Rd. in Ridgeway, Ont. at 9:30 a.m.

There will be speeches by Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop; Port Colborne Mayor John Maloney; constituency assistant Anna Annunziata (for MP Rob Nicholson); and regional council member Sandy Annunziata.

PALPS also produced a Picture Postage stamp (shown above) for this Saturday’s ceremony.

CANCELLATION AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT 2017

Ridgeway Postmaster Donna Carver and Canada Post Local Area Superintendent Connie Flagg will join in the celebrations and place the new cancellation on letters and cards. The cancellation will be available throughout the year at the Ridgeway Post Office.

PALPS also produced a Picture Postage stamp as well as postcards bearing the image of the lighthouse.

CANCEL COLLECTORS

Commemorative postcards were also produced by PALPS.

A cancellation (or cancel) is a postal marking applied to a postage stamp or a piece of postal stationery indicating the item has been postally used. Collecting cancellations is a unique area of philately that sees collectors travel the world to stop at each post office for a cancellation.

More information about the ceremony can be found on the PALPS website.
