Toronto collector, exhibitor and mailer’s postmark manager Derwin Mak submitted a first-day cover (FDC) to the online “Portraits of Resilience” exhibit hosted by the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO).
Mak, a regular proponent of “do-it-yourself philately,” created the FDC for his pandemic self-haircut Picture Postage stamp. The stamp is tied by a March 6-dated mailer’s postmark, and the self-haircut “selfie” is also shown as the cachet.
“Like many people, I had to cut my own hair during the pandemic,” reads Mak’s artwork description. “Unlike most people, I put a selfie of my self-haircut on a Picture Postage stamp, a personalized stamp from Canada Post.”
The AGO’s Portraits of Resilience is “an open call for artists of all ages to participate in an online exhibition of artworks showcasing moments of emotion and resilience in everyday life,” according to its website, ago.ca/portraits-resilience.
