Fall ‘National Show’ to combine with provincial convention

By Jesse Robitaille

Trajan Publishing’s National Postage Stamp & Coin Show will return to its pre-pandemic form this September after entering a partnership with a provincial coin convention.

In conjunction with the 60th anniversary convention of the Ontario Numismatic Association (ONA), the show will run from Sept. 9-11 at its usual venue, the Hilton Mississauga/Meadowvale hotel in northwestern Mississauga, Ont. Building on this spring’s scaled-back National Show – the first in more than two years due to the pandemic – organizers have re-added all of the event’s usual activities, including the seminars and youth program. Trajan will manage the 50-dealer stamp and coin bourse and schedule a handful of philatelic seminars while the ONA will host a three-speaker educational symposium and other coin-focused convention events.

At the Spring 2022 show, organizers once again partnered with the North Toronto Stamp Club to host its annual exhibition. It was the first live exhibition since the pandemic broke out in March 2020, forcing the cancellation of the National show for two consecutive years.

“We’re so excited to return to our regular programming for this fall’s National Postage Stamp & Coin Show following our smaller yet well-attended spring show, our first in more than two years,” said Mike Walsh, Trajan’s managing partner and CSN’s editor. “We’re also happy to team up with the ONA to host the biggest combined coin and stamp show in the Greater Toronto Area in three years.”

The ONA Convention, which has also faced a three-year pandemic hiatus, will feature all of its usual programming, including the educational symposium, a competitive numismatic exhibition, an awards banquet plus the ONA’s annual general meeting and several chapter meetings.

“This is the first time that the ONA has partnered with an existing show, and we are hoping that both parties benefit from the experience,” said ONA President Sean Sinclair. “We expect that many people who do not typically attend one event or the other will take part in some of the many exciting activities, bringing new faces and business to both.”

The three numismatic presentations will explore 19th-century coiners, counterfeiters and issuers of unauthorized tokens; the development of organized numismatics in Canada; and banknote collecting.

REGULAR PROGRAMMING

For this September’s show, Trajan will also bring in several philatelic speakers, who will be announced on the show website, stampandcoinshow.com, in late August.

For the first time since 2019, the show’s Young Collectors booth will be open along with the bourse on Sept. 10-11, with a youth auction – free for children aged 17 and under – on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.

The two-day stamp and coin bourse opens both days at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. on Sept. 10, when admission is $5, and until 4 p.m. on the following day, when admission drops to $2. Children aged 17 and 18 can attend for free.

The upcoming show will also feature a mostly numismatic two-session Premier Auction hosted by Colonial Acres on Sept. 9-10. For more details about the auction, visit colonialacres.com.
