Edmonton club awards former editor

Edmonton Stamp Club (ESC) President Barend Wissink presented an award to long-time Bulletin editor Fred Tauber at the group’s Dec. 19 meeting.

“The award depicted the first issue that Fred ever edited, and the last,” reads the club’s January Bulletin, for which Tauber served as editor for eight years.

The editor role has been filled by ESC member John-Paul Himka, a long-time historian and retired University of Alberta history professor, who has written for CSN and the Ukrainian Philatelist. A former decades-long ESC member, Himka rejoined the club in early 2020 after an 11-year hobby hiatus. From 1995-2003, he and his wife ran Lemberg Stamps & Covers, which specialized in Ukrainian philatelic material. He mainly collects the stamps and first-day covers of modern Ukraine since the country gained independence in 1991.

Before his 2014 retirement, Himka travelled to Ukraine several times during his three-decade career to conduct research on several areas of expertise, including the Holocaust.
