Canada Post unveils ‘Places of Pride’ stamps

Canada Post is set to release a new commemorative stamp set celebrating four sites that played a pivotal role in Canada’s 2SLGBTQIA+ history.

Titled Places of Pride, the four-stamp issue highlights landmark locations that became hubs for activism, resilience, and community, each contributing to the national conversation on equality and inclusion.

The stamps will be officially available on May 30, both online at canadapost.ca and at select postal outlets across the country.

Each design in the set showcases a specific site where historic events unfolded, offering a visual tribute to moments that helped shape Canadian society.

The stamps feature the following locations:

  • Club Carousel in Calgary, opened in 1970 as the city’s first gay bar. It created a safe gathering place for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community by operating under a members-only policy to protect patrons from harassment.

  • Truxx Bar in Montréal, the site of a major 1977 police raid that sparked widespread protests. The public backlash led to a landmark amendment to Quebec’s Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, making it the first Canadian legislation to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

  • Hanlan’s Point Beach in Toronto, where the 1971 Gay Day Picnic took place. The event is considered the first large-scale public gathering for lesbian and gay rights in Canada, laying the groundwork for what would become the Pride movement.

  • The 3rd North American Native Gay & Lesbian Gathering, held in 1990 near Beausejour, Man., where the term “Two-Spirit” was formally introduced and adopted. This marked a significant moment in recognizing distinct Indigenous identities within the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ spectrum.

The Places of Pride set was designed by Kelly Small of Intents & Purposes Inc., with illustrations by Tim Singleton. Printed by Colour Innovations, the issue includes a booklet of eight Permanent domestic-rate stamps and four official first-day covers.

Canada Post says the stamps reflect the ongoing journey toward inclusion and equity, and each featured site represents a milestone in creating safer, more visible spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ Canadians.
