A U.S. postcard signed by each of the four Beatles was among the highlights of a 481-lot sale hosted on July 15 by Connecticut’s Daniel F. Kelleher Auctions.
Crossing the block as Lot 3, the 1951 U.S. two-cent carmine rose Benjamin Franklin postcard (Scott #UX38) features the signatures of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr on the back. Auctioneers describe the signatures as “clean and as fresh as the day they were written.”
“Love from The Beatles” is also written above the signatures in the top-left corner.
Accompanied by the Royal Mail’s 2007 “Beatles Album Covers” presentation pack, which includes six stamps (Scott #2421-2426) plus a four-stamp souvenir sheet (Scott #2420), the lot realized $3,750 US (about $5,000 Cdn.) on an estimate of $5,000 US-$7,500 US.
Other auction highlights include:
- the William D. Newcomb Collection (of Mexico, Canada and British North America);
- the David Pitts Collection (of Bermuda, Prince Edward Island and British Atlantic postal history);
- the Robert Penn Collection (of Spain and its colonies); the Patrick Giddings Collection (of France); and
- additional items from other consignors.
