Barrie club gets media spotlight

The Barrie District Stamp Club was recently featured by local online news provider, barrietoday.com.

Established in 1960, the club held its 60th annual stamp show at the Innisfil-Stroud Community Centre in October, which featured eight dealers from across Ontario. Additionally, the article states that several club members and affiliated philatelists from the Owen Sound Stamp Club participated in displaying exhibits of their collections. Topics included Canada’s Group of Seven, the Berlin Airlift (1948-49), Canada’s Victoria Cross recipients (Canada’s Valour), Allied Offensive (Second World War), Calla Lily Definitives, Owen Sound Fancy Cancellations and F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve (1997 and 2017).

“These collections required hours of research, typesetting, and visual display within large picture-type frames,” states a news release from the club. “They were judged by an accredited official from the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada and displays were awarded ribbons of merit based on points.” The Michael Millar Novice Award was presented by Ellen Millar to club member Rob Clarke for his Villeneuve entry. Millar is the daughter of Michael Millar, one of the founding members of the Barrie club.

The article also focused on the benefits of attending a local stamp club, including learning more about Canadian history as well as countries of the world. “You will be amazed at the variety of world collections and those that focus on specific topics,” says the group, such as sports, animals, the First and Second World Wars plus other conflicts, and Canadian history. “The list is endless.” More information is also available at barriedistrictstampclub.ca.
