APS hands out Star Route Awards

Several Canadian clubs received honours in the 2023 Star Route Awards, which the American Philatelic Society (APS) revived in 2021 to recognize the best North American philatelic newsletters and websites.

In the newsletter category, the four Canadian winners included:

  • the Edmonton Stamp Club Bulletin, edited by John-Paul Himka, which won a vermeil medal;
  • the Calgary Philatelist, the Calgary Philatelic Society (CPS) newsletter edited by Dale Speirs, and PhilaJournal, the Great Toronto Area Philatelic Alliance newsletter edited by Tom Malicki, both of which won large vermeil medals; and
  • the North Toronto Stamp Club (NTSC) Newsletter, edited by Jean Wang, which won a gold medal.

The two Canadian winners in the website category included the Calgary Philatelic Society website, calgaryphilatelicsociety.com, which Dave Bartlet serves as webmaster, and the NTSC website, northtorontostampclub.ca, which Leon Matthys serves as webmaster. Both sites recovered a large vermeil medal. “I want to congratulate the clubs that won awards,” said APS Executive Director Scott English, who added organizers “wanted to both encourage and highlight the great work that’s going on out there, but at the same time, we want to be a resource for those those editors and clubs that want to step up their game.”
