Two June sales launch under Sparks International banner

Sparks International, formerly known as Sparks Auctions, is drawing attention to two June sales that together offer more than 1,000 lots of stamps, postal history and revenue material from Canada, British North America and around the world.

In an email to clients, the Ottawa-based firm announced its third Postal History of the World sale on June 10 and its 56th Stamps and Postal History of the World sale on June 18-19. According to the Sparks International team, both auctions have already attracted strong advance bidding.

The June 10 Postal History of the World sale features more than 400 lots spanning the 17th to 20th centuries. The offering includes flight covers, disinfected mail from the Italian states, military and censored mail, wreck covers and stampless correspondence. Particularly noteworthy is a strong section of U.S. transatlantic mail carrying original historical content, including anti-slavery correspondence and letters from the Gold Rush era.

Among the Canadian-related highlights is a 1944 illustrated Christmas air letter sent by Leading Aircraftman George A. Jenkinson of the Royal Canadian Air Force from India to his aunt in Toronto. In the letter, Jenkinson writes about Christmas preparations overseas and his hopes of returning home in the new year. The piece is one of several lots that offer collectors a glimpse into the personal experiences behind the mail.

Lot 552: Described by Sparks International as the finest known example of the rare $5 French War Savings stamp issued for use in Quebec, this 1918 revenue rarity headlines Part IV of the Simone Collection of Canadian Revenues in the firm’s June 18-19 auction.

The June 18-19 Stamps and Postal History of the World sale is anchored by two important single-owner holdings: the Dubois Collection of British North America postal history and Part IV of the Simone Collection of Canadian Revenues. According to Sparks International, the Dubois collection includes one of the few recorded examples of mail associated with the Aroostook War as well as the latest known example of the celebrated Red River manuscript cancel.

The Simone collection features numerous Canadian revenue rarities, highlighted by what the firm describes as the finest known example of the $5 French War Savings stamp and the unique example on document. Few examples survive because the stamps were typically destroyed after being redeemed, making the issue one of the great rarities of Canadian revenue collecting.

Canada and British North America are represented throughout the June 18-19 sale, from classic issues to modern errors and varieties, including material from the Ralph Trimble collection of re-entries and varieties. Newfoundland collectors will also find notable offerings, including the rare 1919 Hawker Flight cover and a 1927 De Pinedo flight cover. Worldwide collectors can expect a diverse selection ranging from historically significant stampless mail to Swiss postal history addressed to uncommon destinations.

The announcement also marks the company’s transition from Sparks Auctions to Sparks International. The firm said the new name reflects its expanding activities beyond public auctions, including retail and private treaty sales, broader consignment and purchasing opportunities, and increased participation in the international philatelic marketplace.

“Our continued presence at major international exhibitions is part of the same story: a broader reach, and a deeper commitment to the global collector community,” the Sparks International team wrote in its email.

The company’s new website is now operating at sparksinternational.ca.

Looking ahead, Sparks International said it is accepting consignments for upcoming autumn and winter sales. Planned offerings include Part V of the Simone Collection of Canadian Revenues, a specialized Boer War postal history collection, material related to the Québec Tercentenary issue and significant holdings of Canada’s Decimal Issue.

Representatives of the company recently attended ORAPEX and the Boston 2026 World Stamp Expo and are scheduled to appear at several upcoming events, including the Salon du Timbres et vieux papier in Québec City on June 6-7, Royal 2026 Royale in Waterloo, Ont., on June 12-14, and the Macao 2026 World Stamp Exhibition from June 26 to July 1.
