Canada Post has released a new stamp honouring award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan, known for her emotional ballads and soulful vocals.
The stamp was unveiled on Sept. 17 at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Vancouver, B.C., recognizing the musician’s remarkable career, during which she has sold over 40 million albums worldwide.
Designed by Jocelyne Saulnier of Joce Creative, the stamp features a photograph of McLachlan alongside a stylized version of her signature. The background showcases a detail from her hand silk-screened art print, Blue Sunrays. The cancel site for the stamp is Vancouver, B.C., McLachlan’s longtime home.
Born in Halifax, N.S., in 1968, McLachlan was adopted as an infant and began her classical training in guitar, piano, and voice at a young age. After spending a year studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, she moved to Vancouver, B.C., where she released her first studio album, Touch, in 1988 at the age of 20.
McLachlan’s career took off with her second album, Solace (1991), which went gold in Canada and earned her first two JUNO nominations, along with her first win for Best Video for the single “Into the Fire.” Her breakthrough album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (1994), became a major success in both Canada and the United States, marking its 30th anniversary this year with a North American tour.
Since then, McLachlan has released six more studio albums, including the multi-platinum Surfacing (1997), her best-selling album to date. Featuring hits such as “Building a Mystery,” “Sweet Surrender,” and “Angel,” the album won two Grammy Awards and four JUNO Awards, cementing McLachlan’s place in Canadian music history.
In 1997, McLachlan founded Lilith Fair, an all-female concert tour that helped launch the careers of many women artists while raising over $7 million for charity. Her philanthropic efforts continue through the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, a non-profit organization that provides free music education and mentorship to children and youth facing barriers to access.
Over her illustrious career, McLachlan has been recognized with numerous honours, including being appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (1999), the Order of British Columbia (2001), and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (2015). She was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2017 and will join the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on Sept. 28, 2024.
