Sidney Soanes, a member of The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC) for more than 50 years, died this February at the age of 96.
“Soanes started collecting stamps over 80 years ago,” reads a memorial published in the May/June 2018 issue of The Canadian Philatelist, the bimonthly publication of The RPSC.
“He enjoyed firsts for his exhibits at TOPEX 1960 and 1963 in the U.S.A. He was head boy at Upper Canada College, after which he spent 10 years at the University of Toronto studying math and physics. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, then did his masters, and finally a PhD. For the next 25 years, he worked for Ferranti-Packard Electric, doing electronic design. He eventually started his own company, JVA Scientific Consultants Limited, designing industrial electronics. He also had a small publishing company, Queen City Publishing Limited.”
Soanes received his 50-year pin from The RPSC in 2010.
