The Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation has temporarily closed its Toronto meeting room following water damage caused by a leak from a residential condominium unit above the facility.
While the meeting room remains closed until repairs are complete, both the Greene Foundation and the Harry Sutherland Philatelic Library continue to operate under regular hours. Access to the auction catalogue collection in the affected meeting room may be limited during this time.
Discovered on Saturday, Aug. 2, by the building’s custodian, the leakage affected the ceiling tiles, flooring, and three chairs within the Greene Foundation’s meeting room. No philatelic materials, including the auction catalogue collection housed in that space, were damaged.
A professional emergency response team responded promptly and is currently on-site with equipment to dry the affected area. Restoration work cannot begin until all moisture is removed, which is expected to take several days. Plumbers have also been called in to identify and address the source of the leak from the residential floors above.
“We regret the inconvenience of this temporary closure for our regular users of the meeting room,” said Foundation President David McLaughlin. “We will work to rectify this issue and reopen the meeting room as soon as possible. Future communications will be issued when the repair work is fully scheduled, and a meeting reopening date can be forecast.”
Used regularly by collectors, philatelic researchers and society groups, the Greene’s meeting room has long served as a vital resource and gathering space for Canada’s philatelic community.
The Foundation will provide further updates once a timeline for repairs and reopening is confirmed.
