A series of recent coyote encounters has led Canada Post to temporarily adjust mail delivery in a northwest Calgary neighbourhood.
The situation is unfolding in Cambrian Heights, a residential area near Nose Hill and Confederation Parks, where postal workers have encountered coyotes along one of their regular delivery routes.
In a statement to CTV News Calgary, Canada Post said it has implemented a temporary plan to reduce risk to employees. “We devised a temporary plan to deliver mail every three business days using a team delivery approach,” the Corporation confirmed.
While regular service is expected to resume once safety can be assured, Canada Post says it has been in communication with local officials about the issue and is monitoring the situation closely.
“We encourage our delivery agents to make the call if they feel it is unsafe to deliver to a household,” the statement added. Residents with concerns are encouraged to contact customer service at 1-866-607-6301 or visit Canada Post’s website.
The City of Calgary has warned that this time of year marks the emergence of coyote pups from their dens, often resulting in increased territorial behaviour among adult coyotes. To help reduce the risk of encounters, the city advises residents to keep dogs leashed and under control, stand their ground if approached, and make themselves appear larger by waving arms and shouting. People are also encouraged to carry a noisemaker, such as a jar of coins, and in persistent cases, to throw small objects near—but not at—the animals to deter them.
Any sightings or aggressive coyote behaviour should be reported to the City of Calgary’s 311 service.
