U.S. pauses 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods for three days

The United States has temporarily paused its planned 50 per cent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, providing a short reprieve for Canadian stamp dealers and other businesses bracing for the new duties to take effect Aug. 19.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the tariffs would be delayed for three days as Canada and the United States continue working toward a trade agreement. Trump said the pause was granted as the two countries work to finalize an agreement, while Prime Minister Mark Carney has been more cautious, saying substantial progress has been made and negotiations are continuing.

“I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!” the U.S. president wrote on Truth Social late Tuesday night. “The great Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave!”

Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a more cautious tone, saying in a statement that “substantial progress has been made, although there is important work still to be done.” He confirmed the United States has agreed to postpone implementation of the 50 per cent tariff until the end of Aug. 21 while negotiations continue. “While we continue this work, Canada remains focused on building a stronger, more independent, and more competitive economy at home,” Carney added.

The development is particularly important to the Canadian philatelic trade. As Canadian Stamp News reported earlier this week, the Canadian Stamp Dealers Association warned members that tariff classification HTSUS 9704.00.00 was among those affected by the proposed 50 per cent tariff. The classification includes postage and revenue stamps, first-day covers, postal stationery and similar collectible material. Canadian dealers had also reported that some shipping systems were already calculating the 50 per cent tariff ahead of the Aug. 19 deadline.
