Penticton club donates to SPCA

Penticton and District Stamp Club members Nigel Skermer and Harv Baessler recently donated about $700 – proceeds from donated stamp collections – to a local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on behalf of the club.

As part of the club’s fundraising mandate, its members regularly inquire with local collectors about donating their stamp collection or philatelic inheritance.

While some people simply throw old collections in the trash, Baessler told the local Summerland Review newspaper “there’s value in the stamps,” adding the club sometimes receives donated collections worth “thousands of dollars.”

After the donations are sold to the collecting community at auction, the proceeds are donated to organizations like the SPCA and South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation.

Since the club, which currently has about 35 members, began its fundraising initiative in 2015, it has raised more than $40,000 for local charities.

The club meets every month at the Penticton United Church.
