Dean W. Mario of Saskatoon, Sask., has been honored with the 2023 Pratt Award for his work titled “Newfoundland’s Postal Censorship During the Great War.”
Presented annually by the Collectors Club of Chicago, the award acknowledges noteworthy articles or publications related to the philately of Newfoundland. Mario’s research was published in the British North America Philatelic Society’s Journal, BNA Topics, Vol. 80, No. 3.
The committee lauded Mario’s article for its exceptional exploration of Newfoundland’s formalized civil mail censorship plans during the Great War. Mario provided detailed pictorial descriptions of three types of censorship hand stamps of Newfoundland and discussed foreign censorship on mail to and from the region. His piece was praised for its comprehensive coverage of a niche aspect of Newfoundland’s postal history.
Named in tribute to Robert H. Pratt, a distinguished Newfoundland stamp and postal history collector, researcher, and author, the CCC Pratt Award has honored outstanding contributions to Newfoundland philately since 1997.
