R. Maresch & Son has announced its upcoming Sale 587, which will be offered in two live internet auction sessions on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and Thursday, Sept. 18. Each session begins at 10 a.m. (EST).
As with previous events, the sale will be conducted entirely online through Stamp Auction Network, with no floor bidding.
The auction features 962 lots, including a wide range of Canadian and worldwide material. Among the standout pieces:
-
Lot 223 – a remarkable piece of postal history featuring two one-cent brown red issues (with perf faults from hanging over the edge) plus a one-cent 1859 on combination cover. Cancelled with a green Wroxeter U.S. July 1, 1868 marking and straight-line Registered to Goderich, it also shows Seaforth July 3, 1868 and B & LHR/West RPO transits, with a large Goderich split circle on the back. Slightly reduced at left, this cover has a strong pedigree from the Harrison Collection and comes with a 2020 Vincent Graves Greene certificate. Pre-sale estimate: $1,500-plus.
-
Lot 338 – a King George V engraved die proof (74 x 89 mm), die sunk on card (130 x 185 mm) bearing the inscription H.M. King George V, Canada Special -A-17 with American Bank Note Co., Ottawa imprint. The card shows a small internal crease but appears very fine. Estimated at $250-plus.
-
Lot 403 – a 5-cent St. Lawrence Seaway (Scott 387a) with inverted centre, never hinged with slightly disturbed gum, very fine. The upper left stamp from a block of four, it is accompanied by a 2024 Vincent Graves Greene certificate. It comes with a catalogue value of $12,500.
Other highlights include strong sections of two- and four-ring numeral cancels, mint and used Jubilees, modern Canadian errors and varieties, Semi-Official Airmails, and valuable Newfoundland collections. Collectors will also find large worldwide holdings from Great Britain, Germany, Lebanon, Syria, and the United States.
Public viewing is now taking place at the firm’s Toronto offices from until Sept. 13 and again Sept. 15 to 16, running 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, including Saturday, Sept. 13. No appointment is necessary, although out-of-town clients wishing to view earlier are encouraged to call in advance to make arrangements.
Auctioneer Peter Maresch notes that the firm’s last sale was “very successful,” drawing widespread interest in its larger lots and praised for the convenience of consignment drop-offs and purchase pickups. With expanded shelving capacity and strong consignments, the auction house reports its facilities are once again full of material.
Bidding will be conducted in Canadian dollars, with U.S. dollar equivalents listed on invoices for international clients. As Maresch emphasized, the sales continue to attract a growing number of bidders from both Canada and abroad.
