Cherry blossoms bloom on annual flower stamps

Canada Post’s popular annual flower series returns for 2026 with a pair of ornamental cherry blossoms, continuing a spring tradition that has become a favourite among collectors and mailers alike.

This year’s issue features two celebrated cultivars: Prunus ‘Somei-yoshino’, known for its soft white to pale pink clusters, and Prunus ‘Kanzan’, admired for its rich, deep pink double blooms and cold hardiness. Both varieties are widely planted across North America and are especially associated with spring blossom festivals and garden landscapes.

Cherry blossoms are long regarded as symbols of renewal and the fleeting nature of beauty. During their short blooming season, the trees form sweeping canopies of colour before shedding petals in a soft carpet below, a spectacle that draws visitors and photographers each year.

According to Canada post, the stamps reproduce original photographs taken at the Nitobe Memorial Garden at the University of British Columbia. The issue was designed by Bélisle Creative, with photography by Brett Hitchins, and printed by Lowe-Martin.

Collectors can obtain the issue in several formats, including a booklet of 10 Permanent stamps, a coil of 50, a souvenir sheet and an Official First-Day Cover.

Launched in 2007, the Annual Flower series has become one of the most successful recurring themes in Canada Post’s stamp program. Issued each spring, the series typically showcases two floral subjects and is frequently chosen for wedding invitations, celebratory mail and personal correspondence.

Over nearly two decades, the Annual Flower stamps have developed into a recognizable modern collecting series. Their photographic style, consistent format and seasonal timing have helped build a steady following among thematic collectors, gardeners and general enthusiasts.

With the 2026 cherry blossom issue, the series moves closer to marking 20 consecutive years of floral releases, reinforcing its place as a contemporary staple in Canadian philately.
