Canada Post has laid off dozens of managers as part of an ongoing restructuring effort and wider cost-reduction plan, according to a report from CTV News.
In a memo to employees obtained by CTV, president and CEO Doug Ettinger said the changes are part of a corporate-wide plan to align management with the organization’s future needs, noting such decisions “are never taken lightly.” Canada Post confirmed the layoffs but did not say how many positions were affected.
The move follows federal directives announced last month by Government Transformation Minister Joel Lightbound, who described the postal service as “effectively insolvent.” The government ordered the corporation to cut management and overhead costs by at least 15 per cent and ease moratoriums on community mailbox conversions and rural post offices.
In response, the union representing about 55,000 postal workers launched a nationwide strike, later shifting to rotating job actions. Negotiations are expected to resume this week.
Ettinger said Canada Post will continue managing reductions through attrition while maintaining a hiring freeze. Since 2018, the Crown corporation has lost more than $5 billion and is expected to lose $1.5 billion in 2025.
