RPSC’s Geldert Medal unawarded for 2022

The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC) has announced it will forgo awarding its 2022 Geldert Medal.

The medal may be awarded annually for the best article or series of articles published in the RPSC’s bimonthly journal, the Canadian Philatelist.

The honour is only open to new authors who have yet to receive the award. The award committee, which includes RPSC officials Ed Kroft, Kevin O’Reilly and George Pepall, “met to review carefully and discuss candidates’ articles before coming to a consensus that the medal not be awarded in 2022,” according to a recent statement from the RPSC.

“If contributors wish to compete for the Geldert Medal, it will be an important factor to feature original research or ‘value added’ to the hobby while acknowledging previous knowledge,” reads the RPSC statement.

Ottawa widow Phyllis Geldert, a collector and RPSC director, launched the Geldert Medal in 1967 to honour her recently deceased husband George, a Fellow of the society who also served as its president from 1958 until his death. She was also named a Fellow a year later and died on Aug. 23, 2000.
