The Peace Arch Stamp Club has made a pair of $1,000 donations to local and provincial charities stemming from stamp donations made by residents in Surrey, B.C., and the surrounding area.
The club donated $1,000 to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation, which raises funds and supports initiatives to develop the hospital campus and boost the community’s health and wellness, in honour of Alfred Bennett.
Bennett, who died last July at age 102, was Canada’s oldest active philatelist. A 2020 CSN Cover Contest submission featuring Bennett won first place in the club category.
The Peace Arch club also donated $1,000 to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in British Columbia and Yukon in memory of Doreen Leishman.
Residents from Surrey and nearby White Rock donated stamp collections, which were then sold or auctioned with the proceeds going towards the club’s donations. To date, the club has donated more than $18,000 to various charities.
The roughly 45-member club has also donated stamps and money to support youth philately in the Philippines (“Philippine philately boosted by Canadians,” CSN Vol. 47 #18, Dec. 20, 2022).
