Nova Scotia’s first stamps diamond shaped

Today marks the anniversary of when Nova Scotia issued its first stamp, in 1851.

Three denominations of the 1st issue were printed in diamond shape. It was a habit, as in New Brunswick in that period, to cut stamps in two to use every part at half its nominal value.

The first stamps were prepared on unperforated sheets that were cut by postmasters.

On July 1st, 1867, Nova Scotia joined the Dominion of Canada.
