New reign begins

It was on this day that King Edward VIII started his reign on the death of his father King George V.

Born June 23, 1894, at Richmond, Surrey, England; died May 28, 1972, at Paris, France.

Prince of Wales from 1911 to 1936. In 1932 first visited Canada, and bought a ranch in the foothills south west of Calgary.

When he became King, he was the Monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British dominions and Emperor of India.

On Dec. 11, 1936 he abdicated in favour of his brother George VI in order to marry “‘the woman I love”, American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson; became the Duke of Windsor, the only British sovereign ever to resign the crown voluntarily.

Toronto financier Sir Edward Peacock managed his estate.
