A cultural icon

On this day in 1954, Elvis Presley recorded a 10 minute demo in Nashville. The test was a dud, with officials at Sun Records deciding he did not demonstrate an ear for harmony. A later session, in July of 1954, proved more successful when a music executive listened in on a jam session and decided they had the new sound he was looking for and started recording. The rest, as they say, is history. In 1988 Presley was honored on a Germany stamp, and the following decade on a United States issue.
