On this day in 1541 French explorer Jacques Cartier landed near present day Quebec City, It was his third trip to Canada. Nearly 40 years later, in 1578 Sir Martin Frobisher sailed out of Harwich England, landing in what is now Frobisher Bay, Canada. His crew mistook a vein of iron pyrite, commonly known as fool’s gold, for the real thing and filled their hold, only to be terribly disappointed after returning home. The nearly useless rock was used as paving stones in London.

Both explorers have been the subject of a number of Canadian stamp issues.Cartier
