Toronto philatelist and award-winning exhibitor Sam Chiu recently became the first Canadian – and only the fourth person ever – to receive the Sapphire Award from the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors (AAPE).
Chiu received the honour, which is granted to exhibitors who have entered a multi-frame exhibit in 20 different national-level shows within 10 years, from AAPE President Mike Ley this August during StampShow 2019, where this year’s “Champion of Champions” competition was held.
Chiu, who said he’s “thankful” for the recognition, added it’s important for exhibitors to support shows.
“It is harder and harder for shows to get exhibits, and without exhibits, we don’t have have a show. I strongly support shows in our hobby and want shows to continue; hence, I exhibit.”
Since Chiu was awarded the honour, another two exhibitors have received the Sapphire Award, bringing the total number of recipients to six.
