USPS issues women’s soccer Forever stamp

Women’s soccer in the United States is receiving a national tribute with the release of a commemorative Forever stamp.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) held a first-day ceremony on Feb. 16 during the opening of the SheBelieves Cup, an invitational soccer tournament taking place Feb. 16-22 in Orlando, Fla.

In a press release, the postal service noted the new Forever stamp “celebrates women’s soccer in the United States.

“From youth leagues to the elite world champion U.S. National Team, millions of girls and women throughout the country participate in the fast-paced, competitive sport.”

The stamp illustrates a female soccer player striking a ball with a side volley. The USPS said conjuring the aesthetic of the mid-century print design, illustrator Noah MacMillan (1988-2022) used simplified shapes and bold colours to convey the sport’s high energy and fast motion. A somewhat grainy rendering was designed so as not to focus on a single all-star athlete or era but on the entire legacy of women’s soccer.

Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp.
