The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced that it will continue its suspension of acceptance of mail and packages bound for Canada, despite the conclusion of the Canada Post strike on Dec. 17, 2024.
The USPS, a key player in global mail logistics known for its reliability and extensive network, stated that it is closely monitoring Canada Post’s progress as it works to clear the backlog created by the labour disruption.
“We anticipate reopening acceptance of Canada-bound volume within the next two weeks and appreciate our customers’ patience as we continue to monitor developments in Canada,” stated a USPS release, dated Dec. 23, 2024.
The Canada Post strike, which began in mid-November, created significant logistical challenges, with volumes of mail and packages staged during the disruption. While the strike has officially ended, USPS says it has decided to maintain its suspension to ensure that Canada Post has the capacity to manage and process the backlog efficiently. The USPS claims its cautious approach aims to avoid overwhelming the Canadian postal network, which is already under strain.
The strike’s timing and prolonged effects have been particularly challenging for Canada’s coin and stamp dealers. With peak sales occurring in the lead-up to the holidays, many businesses faced operational disruptions. Dealers reported delays in fulfilling online orders, with some forced to seek alternative couriers at a higher cost. Others experienced cancellations or hesitations from international buyers
