The international postal sector will mark the Universal Postal Union (UPU) sesquicentennial in 2024. On Feb. 1-2, UPU officials celebrate the organization’s 150th anniversary with a major international historical symposium co-organized with France’s La Poste Groupe and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique.
To be held in the Swiss capital of Bern, the event’s theme is “Making the world a single postal territory – History and timeliness of a global promise.” Organizers will offer attendees a first-of-its-kind opportunity to contemplate more than 8,000 stamps issued by 566 current and former territories since 1840 – the only public presentation of its kind in history.
Canada joined the UPU in January 1878, nearly four years after the union was established by the Treaty of Bern.
