This year marks the 50th anniversary of a nationwide design contest sponsored by the Post Office Department (now Canada Post) for its 1970 Christmas issue.
The contest was held through the 1969 holiday season, and the 12-stamp set was issued on Oct. 7, 1970, with the winning designs chosen from more than 50,000 submissions by Canadian schoolchildren.
As part of an ongoing research project, Nova Scotia collector Michael Pierce is seeking covers, articles and stories related to this issue, which is “an important part of Canadian postal history in so many ways,” he writes in the May edition of the British North America Philatelic Society’s “eLetter.”
Pierce can be contacted at mpierce@bellaliant.net.
