Lack of volunteers forces club to fold

The Oakville Stamp Club has disbanded following the resignation of its long-time president.

Roy Honess resigned from the helm in early 2020 – just weeks before the pandemic began – and with no volunteers to take his place, the club was forced to fold. “I do wish to thank those clubs who came to our rescue in the latter part of 2019 and hope that they continue to prosper,” Honess wrote in Grand News, the Grand River Valley Philatelic Association’s bimonthly journal. Honess died nearly two years later in November 2021.

The 135th chapter of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC), the Oakville club held monthly meetings and hosted regular shows, including the annual Oakpex, which it launched in 1973. The 1983 RPSC Convention was held in Oakville – the only time the southern Ontario city played host to the annual “Royal” – in conjunction with that year’s Oakpex.
