Each of the Focus program’s 18 students produced two Valentine’s Day covers—one that was sent to the high school so the students could add it to their portfolio and another sent to a significant other.

Ottawa art students produce postal covers

Merivale High School is at it again. This Valentine’s Day, Canadian Stamp News received a lovely custom-made envelope – one of a series produced by Grade 11 students at Merivale High School in Ottawa. “Designing miniature works of art is a good challenge for my design students,” said Irving Osterer, the award-winning department head who oversees Merivale’s Fine Arts, Technical Education and Computer Science departments. He’s also the co-ordinator of the school’s Focus program, whose 18 students produced nearly 40 Valentine’s Day covers for their first project of semester two. Continue reading →

High school program inspiring

With Canada Post struggling to hang onto its traditional core mail delivery service, we should be inspired after reading this edition’s cover story on the Ottawa high school students who created postal covers for Valentine’s Day. As reported by CSN’s Jesse Robitaille, the Grade 11 students at Merivale High School participated in a classroom program that gave them a better appreciation of stamp collecting and the history and art behind the hobby.
