The United States Postal Service (USPS) will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, often hailed as “the world’s greatest role-playing game,” at the Gen Con Indy 2024 gaming convention on Aug. 1, in Indianapolis.
Dungeons & Dragons revolutionized gaming with its innovative approach, inviting players to collaborate in crafting open-ended stories guided by books, dice and their imaginations. This imaginative gameplay allows participants to envision themselves as wizards, warriors and other adventurers in fantastical and perilous worlds. Since its inception, Dungeons & Dragons has unlocked new realms of creativity for countless players. Originating as a niche pastime in the Midwest, it has since blossomed into a global phenomenon, boasting an estimated 64 million fans worldwide since its debut in 1974.
Greg Breeding, an art director for USPS, served as both art director and designer for the commemorative stamps. Although limited details on the stamps were released in the USPS announcement, the Dungeons & Dragons stamps will be issued as Forever stamps. The stamps will be available for purchase, along with special cancellations, during all four days of the convention.
