The world’s largest sporting event is coming to Rio de Janeiro this Aug. 5-21.
When the Summer Olympic Games tip off in Brazil, Cyprus – an island country located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea – will once again have athletes participating. To mark the occasion, Cyprus Post has unveiled four new stamps. The commemorative series depicts the sports in which Cypriot athletes are expected to participate. The stamps measure 38 mm x 38 mm and will be issued in sheets of eight.
Four years ago in London, the country won its first Olympic medal of the modern era when Pavlos Kontides earned a silver in men’s laser sailing.
This year, expectations are high. In fact, Red and Black, the newspaper of the University of Georgia, reports Cypriot high jumper Leontia Kallenou has qualified for the upcoming Games and hopes to compete for a medal.
“We all have the right to dream,” said Kallenou. “It’s how much you put in your dreams. I know I worked a lot and my joy is to enjoy the sacrifices.”
