Covert updates permit mail listings

Earle Covert, of Raymond, Alta., has updated his listing of illustrated indicia for permit mail hosted on the British North America Philatelic Society (BNAPS) website.

The Feb. 15 update added 333 permits and 24 bulk mailers – “by far the most ever,” according to Covert. He presented a talk on illustrated permits during a Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada meeting last October, after which time several collectors sent him hundreds of examples.

“Some people send a large group of scans or items at one time. Some send them weekly or every several months. Some have sent one or two, often from a bulk mailer I had never seen before,” Covert wrote on the BNAPS website. “I appreciate all contributions whether it is one or hundreds.” Now with 3,934 permits and 816 bulk mailers, the listing launched following Canada Post’s 2006 introduction of illustrated indicia for permit mail. It also includes “forerunners,” which are pre-2006 illustrated indicia.

Alongside William Walton, of Califon, N.J., Covert also co-edited the eighth edition of Webbs Postal Stationery Catalogue, published in late 2019 (“Webbs Postal Stationery Catalogue features new numbering system,” CSN Vol. 44 #20).
