After planning an issue to commemorate “Brexit” – Britain’s departure from the European Union (EU) – Austria’s national postal service was left with 140,000 stamps bearing the original (and since passed) deadline date of March 29, 2019.
When Britain finally made its exit at the end of this January, Oesterreichische Post issued the original stamp with the March 2019 date crossed out and the real deadline – Jan. 31, 2020 – printed below.
The 1.80-euro stamp shows a map with the United Kingdom printed in light blue while the remaining 27 EU members are shown in deep blue.
It’s unknown if some of the original sheets remain without the 2020 overprint—something that would surely pique philatelists’ interests.
