Austria celebrates 175 Years of postage stamps

Austria is commemorating 175 years since the issuance of its first postage stamp with a special miniature sheet that captures the evolution of Austrian philately.

Released on April 18, 2025, this four-stamp set offers a visual journey through the nation’s rich postal history.

The first stamp in the series features Austria’s inaugural 1850 “Coat of Arms” issue, marking the country’s entry into the world of postage stamps. The second stamp showcases the 1926 “Nibelungen Saga” series, designed by renowned artist Wilhelm Dachauer, which earned the Thompson Medal for the world’s most beautiful stamp. The third stamp highlights the 1949 “Day of Stamps” issue, Austria’s first stamp dedicated to promoting philately. Completing the set is the 1975 “Spiral Tree” stamp from the “Modern Art in Austria” series, featuring artwork by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Designed by Anita Kern and printed by Joh. Enschedé Stamps B.V. using offset printing, each stamp measures 35 x 35 mm, and the sheet size is 110 x 90 mm. The stamps are perforated at 13¾ x 13¾, and a total of 120,000 sheets have been produced.

This commemorative issue not only celebrates Austria’s philatelic milestones but also serves as a testament to the country’s cultural and artistic heritage as reflected through its postage stamps.
